Dances of Brežice region
A region in the eastern part of Slovenia.
This area is very characteristic, sorrounded on the north and the south with the high hills, between them is the agricultural valley along the river Sava. On the east is the river Sotla and the border with Croatia.In the past these border was connecting both nations.
Dancers wear a tipical farmer¢s costumes from this area, dated in the beginning of 19 th century – white grabs of Panonian type and colourful grabs from the surrounding hills of Alpine type.
The musicians play the violines and contrabass.
Dances of Štajerska
The region in a northeast and a central part of Slovenia with lots of hills covered with forests and smaller hills planted with fruit orchards and vineyards.
A century ago people lived in a small wooden houses and had many children. Their live was hard and modest but they were kind and good natured. They liked to sing and dance.
National grab ( festive) dated from 1st half of 20th century
The dance tradition is rich in figures and enables the dancers to express their temperament and character. Dances are accompanied with funny and witty games. The musicians play the accordion, the clarinet and the baritone.
Dances of Gorenjska
Gorenjska is a region in a northwest part of Slovenia. It is an alpine region with high mountains and narrow valleys; a dance characteristics are the same – facetious and pride which are reflected in rithmical knocks, quick turns, jumps and rollicking shout of joy. They were usually danced on festivities and weddings. The musicians play the accordion, the clarinet and the contrabass.
National costumes are dated from 2nd half of 19th century, alpine type.
Dances of Prekmurje
The region of Prekmurje lies in the far north-east of Slovenia, in the triangle between the Mura river and the Austrian and Hungarian borders.
The dances were influenced by the way of life and working of Panonian countryside. People dance more slowly, with short and supple steps, sometimes they are shaking the body. The musicians play the accordion, the clarinet, the contrabass and the violin.
The Prekmurje costumes are plain and simple. Men wore broad trousars, a shirt and a waist-jacket; women wore simple skirts, aprons and blouses- they are dated from 2nd half of 19th century, Panonian type.
Dances of Bela Krajina
On the sunny side of the Gorjanci range and as far as the Croatian border lies Bela Krajina, a region of rich and varied dance traditions.
At the beginning f the previous century , tamburaši ( tamburica band) appeared all over Slovenia but as dance bands they survived only in Bela Krajina.They brought with them a dance repertoire that mostly originated from the Croatian Pannonian plains.
The women wear costumes made of lightly embroidered homespun linen or damask.The men¢s costumes are of a simple cut and also made of linen.
